Former Michigan Coach Sherrone Moore Booked into Jail over Allegations of Assault

The former head of the Michigan Wolverines, Sherrone Moore, is once again in the headlines-and for reasons very far from the football field. Hours after the University of Michigan announced his immediate termination, Moore was taken into custody on Wednesday as a suspect in an alleged assault case in Washtenaw County.

According to officials, Moore had been in initial custody in Saline, Michigan, before being turned over to Pittsfield Township for further investigation. The incident is now part of an active police inquiry.

Police Confirm Ongoing Investigation

Pittsfield Township Police said officers responded to a call about 4:10 p.m. in the 3000 block of Ann Arbor Saline Road for an alleged assault, involving a man who was later taken into custody.

Police explained in their official statement that:

• It was not a random incident.
• There is no ongoing threat to the public.
• The suspect is currently in Washtenaw County Jail as prosecutors review potential charges.

No additional information has been released because the investigation is still open, authorities said, and investigators have not publicly identified the suspect. Previous statements from the Saline Police Department had only noted that officers there assisted in finding and taking into custody former Michigan coach Sherrone Moore, who was then turned over to Pittsfield Township investigators.

Michigan Fires Moore After Internal Investigation

The University of Michigan let Moore go on Wednesday, issuing a statement that cited “credible evidence” of an improper relationship with a staff member. The university said:

"U-M head football coach Sherrone Moore has been terminated, with cause, effective immediately."

The announcement followed an internal university investigation that found Moore violated institutional conduct policies. His termination came just two seasons into his tenure as head coach—after previously serving as the Wolverines’ offensive coordinator.
